Travis Family & Community Newsletter

Your weekly guide to Travis ECHS updates Week of October 14

Hello Travis Families & Community!

This week is the end of the 1st 9weeks! Please check your students grades and encourage them to get any missing assignments turned into their teacher this week and correct/make up any missing exams. Be sure to check your student's grades regularly at the parent portal: portal.austinisd.org

We continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month- This Wednesday is Represent your culture! Wear traditional clothing from your country.

A friendly reminder to submit absence notes to the front office. Absences add up! Did you know, missing two days or more per month means a student misses more than 10% of the school year? Students will receive an "NC" for no credit on their transcripts even if they passed the class. Attendance matters! Be sure to check your student's attendance regularly at the parent portal: portal.austinisd.org

Reminder: Friday is an A Day

Have a great week, Rebels!

Has a staff person at Travis provided you with excellent support or gone out of their way to help you? Send them a RAVE!

Attendance Reminders/Updates

**90% rule what does it mean?**

If a student drops below 90% in a course, an "NC" is entered instead of a grade. The grade may be passing – but the student did not attend at least 90% of the time. Please contact your student’s Assistant Principal to see what corrective steps must be taken.

Notices are going out to families this week whose students are dropping below 90% attendance and we will be required to attend "Attendance Matters" workshop:

  • Required participation in Attendance Workshop on Wednesday, October 16 from 9:30 - 10:30 am

  • Attendance at this workshop can contribute toward credit recovery.

  • To regain credit, students can attend after school tutoring on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:45 pm to 6:15 pm through twilight. See Twilight information below.

Welcome to our Librarian, Ms. Suarez!

Shelley Suarez, our new Library Media Specialist (Librarian), is from South Austin, Texas and an alum of Crockett High School, graduating class of 1994. She grew up south of the river, has multiple certifications including EMT-B, Phlebotomy, Advanced Massage Therapy and certified LMT, Pre Med., Nursing (1 semester shy of a bachelor’s), and has several higher education degrees including a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in Accounting, a Master’s Degree in Education from The University of Texas in Curriculum and Instruction and a second Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from The University of Texas, and both M. Ed. with a 100% average.

To continue her love of learning she became a newbie auto mechanic and also learned how to basic weld and do basic automotive electrical wiring. She completed her first frame-off rebuild of her 1984 Jeep CJ-7, which took 4 full years to complete. She taught herself how to do electrical work on that Jeep, and Hey, it all works great!

Mrs. Suarez has a love for education and thoroughly enjoys helping students find their way through the challenging days of high school to be a success in the real world. She specializes in forensic sciences, anatomy and physiology, marine biology, algebra 1, and biology. She also is an expert in data collection, data analysis, campus improvement initiatives, reflection, mindfulness and awareness coaching, life coaching, and community building.

After taking a short break from public education to focus on her Jeep rebuild, she is back and honored to be a part of AISD at Travis ECHS! She is committed to bettering our community by leading by example, creating an environment of respect, fun learning, literacy enhancement, discovery of self, and excellent communication. Now, she has her continuing education eyes set on the LACE Certification to become a certified librarian while she is in her first year here.

If you need assistance in research, writing professional and academic papers, resume writing, volunteer ideas, college and career readiness, life success skills, soft skills, STAAR prep, discovery of self, or choosing a great book, please do not hesitate to stop by and inquire about how she may be of assistance to you! We look forward to a continued great year with this new addition to our family! Go Rebels!
