Welcome back to the 2026-2027 school year! Our team is so excited to welcome our students and families back to school! We appreciate the opportunity to partner with you in supporting your child’s education. As part of our ongoing efforts to keep you informed and engaged, we want to share the following important information:

Important Updates & Information

  • Case Management & Support: Each student receiving special education services has a designated case manager who serves as the main point of contact for families, teachers, administrators, and other staff members supporting your child. If you have not already heard from this teacher by the end of the second week of school, please reach out to your campus principal.
  • Special Education/504 Parent Collaboration Portal: Parents/guardians/adult students will receive an email from “Frontline” with access each time there is a new document requiring review or signature. These documents include IEPs, special education progress reports, 504 documents, etc. For additional information on how to access the parent portal, please reference the Collaboration Portal Parent Guide. Please note that these emails for access are one time use only. You can download the documents, as well.
  • Family Engagement Opportunities: We’re excited to continue our Family Empower Hour series this school year! Join us twice a month on Wednesdays at 12:00 PM for engaging virtual learning sessions designed for our families. We will also take Empower Hour on the road by bringing events directly to campuses. Be sure to check with your school's main office to see when we’ll be visiting your campus. For more information, please contact Bree Rolfe at bree.rolfe@austinisd.org.
  • Special Education Website: The Austin ISD Special Education website offers comprehensive information about the district's special education programs, services, and resources for families and educators. The TEA Special Education Information Center website offers information such as a parent’s guide to the ARD process and information on the legal safeguards for your student.
  • The Special Education Family and Community (SEFAC) Advisory Committee is a dedicated group of parents, caregivers, educators, and community members working together to strengthen special education in Austin ISD. SEFAC provides valuable input and feedback to help shape policies, improve services, and ensure that family voices are heard at every level. We encourage all families to get involved—whether by attending meetings, submitting a public comment, or simply staying informed. Click here to learn more about the committee or here to submit a Public Comment. If you would like to join the committee, here is the application.

Practical Tips from the Special Education Team

As we begin the year, we’d like to share some helpful information on supporting this transition. By establishing consistent routines, partnering with your child's school, supporting your child’s emotional well-being, and celebrating your student's unique strengths, you can help build the confidence and skills needed for a positive and successful year ahead.

Supporting a Smooth Back-to-School Transition

Proactive preparation and strong communication make all the difference! Here are clear, practical strategies to help set your student up for a confident and successful school year:

1. Establish Predictable Routines & Visual Supports

  • Adjust Timelines Early: Gradually shift wake-up times, mealtimes, and bedtimes a week or two before school starts to align with your child’s school schedule.
  • Use Visual Schedules: Incorporate visual checklists, picture schedules, or timers to clarify daily routines and ease transition anxiety.
  • Preview the Day: Walk through what the new daily schedule will look like so your child knows what to expect from morning drop-off to afternoon pickup.

2. Connect Early with Your Case Manager

  • Watch for Outreach: Keep an eye out for initial contact and welcome letters and emails from your student’s Case Manager during the first weeks of school.
  • Share Key Insights: Connect with your child’s teachers and service providers about any changes your child may have experienced over the summer, including health, self-care, regulation, and family updates.  Here are some resources to create a one pager template you can send to your student’s teachers.
  • Organize a Family Binder: Keep your child’s IEP, 504 plan, evaluations, and communication logs in one easy-to-access binder or folder. Here are resources for creating a binder.
  • Engage with AISD Events: Attend Austin ISD Special Education learning events and workshops to build connections and strengthen your advocacy skills. You can attend our virtual events or organize an event at your student’s campus! For an archive of all of our Empower Hour events from last year, check out our family video learning library. For more information contact bree.rolfe@austinisd.org.

3. Build Emotional Regulation & Social Confidence

  • Name and Validate Feelings: Use visuals like charts, journals, or emotion cards to help your child identify how they feel (e.g., excited, anxious, overwhelmed).
  • Practice Calming Tools: Practice simple coping strategies together, such as deep breathing exercises, counting, or utilizing a designated "calm corner" at home.
  • Role-Play Common Situations: Rehearse everyday school scenarios, like raising a hand, accessing the restroom, eating lunch, asking for help, or introducing themselves to new friends.

4. Align Home and School Expectations

  • Learn Classroom Frameworks: Ask your child’s team for the school's positive behavior expectations (e.g., "Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible") so you can reinforce at home.
  • Use Consistent Language: Mirror similar positive reinforcement and expectations from home to school to create predictability across environments.
  • Praise Effort over Perfection: Recognize and celebrate small steps of progress, effort, and resilience rather than focusing solely on outcomes.

5. Focus on Strengths & Celebrate Growth

  • Adopt a "Strengths-First" Mindset: Highlight your student’s unique talents and interests—whether it’s creativity, perseverance, or kindness with them and with school staff.
  • Display Achievements: Set up a dedicated display area at home for student artwork, completed projects or assignments..
  • Keep Up the Encouragement: Remind your child frequently of their past successes to build momentum and self-confidence for the year ahead!
