Policy EFB(LOCAL), approved by the Board 8/21/25 to comply with SB 13, requires school libraries to provide parents with access to their students’ library records and the opportunity to restrict their access to library materials. Until a new library software system can be implemented to facilitate these requirements, the procedures outlined below will apply. Please share these procedures with parents upon request only.

Parental Access to Student Library Records

Parents/guardians may request information on what books their students have checked out from the library by sending an email to the campus librarian or associate of library services, or other staff member designated by the principal, from an email account that is associated with that student.

Parental Restriction of Students’ Access to Library Materials

Parents may submit specific titles of books which they do not want their student(s) to check out or “otherwise access” in the library; we are unable to enforce restrictions on entire categories (e.g., violent, lgbt+, mature content, etc.) as these are inexact and open to interpretation.  A searchable catalog of the titles that are available in each campus library is publicly available at catalog.austinisd.org.

Parents/guardians may restrict access by submitting an AISD Help ticket for each book title:Teaching, Learning, Leading & Community Requests > Student & School Experience > Restricted Access to Library Materials.  The Library Services Department will run a report of the tickets, sort them by campus and student, and share the information with library staff and principals once per week, or as needed. The library staff at each school with restricted students will develop campus-specific procedures for enforcing these restrictions; if a campus receives multiple restriction requests, this will require extra work for library staff and could slow down the process of book checkout.  Information about this process will be added to the Student Handbook.
