A Letter from Principal Bedford

Hello Smallville!

I hope you had a warm and safe week. Despite our shortened schedule this week, it was great to see our Cougars and staff settle back into their routines. Thank you to everyone for your flexibility and support during the weather related closures.

This week, our 6th and 7th grade students began working with choice sheets, giving them the opportunity to explore options and think intentionally about their class choices for next year. These conversations are an important part of helping students build ownership and confidence in their academic journey. Looking ahead, our 8th grade students will begin their course selection process next month. We’re excited to guide them as they prepare for this important next step to high school. If you have any questions regarding choice sheets, please contact your grade level counselor.

As we move forward and settle back into our normal rhythm, the quote “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts,” feels especially fitting this week. Whether weeks are busy or unexpectedly slow, what matters most is our ability to keep showing up, stay connected, and continue growing together.

Thank you for your continued support, and I wish everyone a safe and warm weekend ahead!

Stay Present,

Bedford

📌 Student Registration for the 2026–2027 School Year

Every year, families must register their student for the upcoming school year. This important step:

  • ✔️ Keeps your student’s records updated with current information
  • ✔️ Tells the district and the school where your student will attend
  • ✔️ Helps schools plan for staffing and available student seats for transfers

Important: The district has changed some registration procedures this year. Please read the section below that applies to your family.

🎒 Current 6th & 7th Grade Students (Returning to Small)

If your student is currently in 6th or 7th grade (including transfer kids) and plans to continue at Small Middle School next year, you will complete registration through Enroll Austin in the Parent Portal during Round 2.

🗓️ Round 2 Dates: February 16 – April 10

👉 If you accidentally submitted an Enroll Austin application before February 16, please email Jennifer Rich at jennifer.rich@austinisd.org so the district can disregard the application.

🎓 Incoming 6th Graders or Outgoing 8th Graders (Changing Schools or Applying to a Program)

If your student will be transitioning to a new school next year and you want to apply to a campus with a specialty program, Transfers and homecampus's with specility programs -  your application window is open now.

Whether your student has had them already, or are planning to get them soon please email a copy of the record to me once you have it. NJHS Application

ARE YOU ONE OF OUR BEST AND BRIGHTEST COUGARS?

We are looking for students who exemplify what being a Small Cougar is all about! Help make Small a better place to learn as a member of NJHS. Applications for Clint Small Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society are open through February 24, 2026. Students must access the link through an AISD account. The link can be found on the school website. The application is editable, so it does not need to be completed at a single time. The committee will make determinations by spring break. Please direct any questions to shelby.ottleybujan@austinisd.org

Don’t Miss Out — Pre-Order Your Yearbook!

If you’re new to Small this year, you may not know just how coveted our yearbooks are. This is something you must pre-purchase! We only print the number of books that are ordered in advance, and there is no option to print additional copies after delivery. Every year, students and parents wait until the last minute and are disappointed when they miss out — we don’t want that to be you!

Buy your yearbook before Winter Break to get the Early Bird price of $35.
After the break, the price increases to $40, and all purchases must be made by the end of February to guarantee your copy.

Order online at: 2026 Small Josten's LInk

Our yearbooks are created by our Yearbook classes, who spend the entire school year capturing the memories, moments, and magic of Small. Their work is truly something special!

Check out the artwork this year designed by one of our yearbook students because she said "Each student is a piece of a puzzle and at Small they can always find where they fit in"

Cougars Traveling the World

Educational Travel Programs at Small

At Clint Small Middle School, we are proud to have multiple teachers who sponsor Educational Travel Programs each year. These programs are structured group trips for students, organized in partnership with professional travel providers. The providers take care of the big details—like flights, hotels, meals, guides, and safety—while our teachers lead the learning side of the experience.

What is an Educational Travel Program?
An Educational Travel Program is more than just a trip. It’s an opportunity for students to step outside the classroom and experience history, culture, and language firsthand. Whether exploring another U.S. city or traveling abroad, students gain independence, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the world.

Why might families be interested?

  • Students experience hands-on learning tied to classroom topics.

  • Travel builds maturity, problem-solving, and independence.

  • Professional travel companies provide safety, structure, and support 24/7.

  • Payment plans and group arrangements make these experiences more accessible than traveling on your own.

👉 With multiple teachers sponsoring programs, families can choose from a variety of destinations and opportunities that best fit their student’s interests.

Here is a list of upcoming opportunities
