McCallum High School

Weekend Update #10

Your weekly guide to all things MAC

Principal's Corner

The past two weeks on campus have certainly had a different energy, compared to the end of October. In the wake of the protests we experienced, I feel that our school has come together in a way that was both powerful and necessary. The concern over social media posts and possible threats against the school the week before the protests had our campus on edge. A protest could have sent us further over that edge, but our students responded beautifully — showing compassion, unity, and a commitment to the values of love, inclusion, and support. It was truly inspiring to see students come together across campus, sharing messages of acceptance and standing firm in the face of hate. I also want to thank everyone for staying away from the protestors and not engaging with them, denying them the audience they were hoping for. Your restraint was a testament to our collective maturity and strength as a school community. I also appreciate the parents who came out to support our students. Our students continue to amaze me, and I am incredibly proud of how they handled such a challenging situation.

I’ve received several questions from parents and community members about why the protestors were allowed to be so close to our school and why we didn’t move them. I completely understand these concerns and wish I had the ability to relocate or remove them. Unfortunately, my hands are tied in this regard. Protestors like those who visited are well-versed in their First Amendment rights, which guarantee their ability to assemble and express their views in public spaces. Our campus is bordered by a public sidewalk, and as such, they have the legal right to be there. While I recognize that the messages they were sharing were difficult for many of us to hear, it's important to understand that protestors often craft their statements as a form of free expression, rather than as personal attacks. That being said, I know our students don’t care about the legal nuances—they only hear the hate in the words. Once again, though, I am so proud of how our students rose above this, showing that the values of support, inclusion, and unity are what define us. The "MAC way" was truly on display.

As we move forward, I want to take a moment to commemorate Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Native American peoples. At McCallum, we are dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of the indigenous communities who have shaped our nation’s history. This month, we’ll delve into the unique customs, languages, and art forms that are central to Native American heritage, while also reflecting on the challenges these communities have faced and the triumphs they have achieved. Let’s take this opportunity to appreciate and recognize the enduring spirit and resilience of Native American peoples and their vital role in shaping the fabric of our nation.

Thank you for being a part of this incredible school community, and for helping make McCallum a place of strength, respect, and inclusivity.

  • AP Payments are DUE!! If you have not taken care of your AP balance, then please reach out to Lisa Gorzell immediately.

RAVE All About It!

Since my last update our campus received two additional Rave awards honoring the efforts of our amazing staff.

  • Lia Ferrante- This teacher has gone above and beyond to show her students the incredible potential they all have. She has encouraged confidence and curiosity in her learners and that is exactly what is required of the world. I am so thrilled for my own child to be so excited about school and to let the confidence from one class hold over to all her classes. I’ve seen a difference in my kid this year and would love to applaud a teacher I hear about a lot.

Thank you for being a mentor and inspiration.

  • Nicollette Muller -Our child reached out to Nicollette about a need and Mrs.Muller resolved it quickly and was super helpful and encouraging. We really appreciate all of her guidance. Thanks!

I would love to hear more about the teachers or staff members who make a difference in your child’s life. Please take a moment to recognize their contributions using this link; AISD RAVE.

Winter Wonderbrains

Calling all Freshmen Knights! Link Crew is hosting our 2nd annual Winter Wonderbrains! WWB is a special night to kick off the weekend of studying before December final exams are underway the following week. Link Crew has been hard at work planning (and cutting hundreds of paper snowflakes) in anticipation of this event. If your child is a 9th grade student, they are invited to join us on the evening of Thursday, December 12th from 5:00-7:00 pm in the McCallum cafeteria. Students will be led to study rooms, where we will provide a quiet & cozy atmosphere - including snacks & hot chocolate! - with plenty of Link Crew Leaders on hand to help them study for their tests. If your child is a freshman, please consider having them join us for Winter Wonderbrains!

Parents of all McCallum Knights: we would deeply appreciate donations for this! The cost of putting on Winter Wonderbrains usually falls to the student Link Leaders, but this year we’re asking for your help. THIS LINK will take you to a list of our current needs. Thank you for donating to make this night really special for our freshmen Knights!

Athletic Spotlight

The McCallum Golf Team has been off to an outstanding start this fall, setting new records and posting impressive finishes across several competitive events.

On September 11th, McCallum made history by sending a record-breaking four teams to Anderson's season-opening scramble at Jimmy Clay Golf Course. The JV Boys team, consisting of Tristan Dickey, Viggo Gonzales, Sawyer Hunt, and Rowan Varela, played a remarkable round to capture 1st place, finishing just three over par—a fantastic achievement to open the season.

Moving into October, McCallum continued to impress with another strong showing. On October 15th, the Knights fielded their Varsity Girls team alongside a mix of Varsity and JV Boys at the Cedar Ridge Invitational at Blackhawk Golf Course in Pflugerville. The Varsity Girls team, including Lola Guerrero, Marin Manning, Callen Romell, Tegan Rutherford, and Marlowe Walsh, earned a 1st place finish, with Callen Romell securing an individual highlight by placing 2nd overall with a score of 95. The Varsity Boys also saw success, with Link Stovall and Logan Foohey both achieving personal bests in the tournament. Link shot an impressive 78, and Logan followed closely with a 79 on the par-71 course.

November continued the strong performances. On November 6th, the Varsity Girls competed at Anderson's Invitational at Lions Golf Course, where Callen Romell finished in 8th place overall with a score of 91 in a competitive field. The very next day, both Varsity and JV Boys teams played at Lions, showing significant improvement and increasing their focus on preparation for the upcoming district competition against Anderson in the spring.

The McCallum Golf Team has demonstrated tremendous talent, teamwork, and determination so far this season, and we look forward to more exciting performances as the year continues.

In addition to their golf success, we’re also eager to see our Knights take the court this winter. Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will be competing in tournaments over the next few weeks as they gear up for district play next month.

And, as we continue to celebrate our athletes, a special shoutout to the Knights Wrestling team, which kicked off their season this past weekend with a tournament. Best of luck to all our athletes as they represent McCallum with pride!

Go Knights!

Fall 2024 AISD Occupant Pilot Study: Help us better understand how our school buildings can support your students.

Design researchers often study school buildings to learn how well they work. Austin Independent School District is partnering with a coalition of design companies to improve the quality and consistency of these studies. This research will test how well our survey tools work with teachers and students, and how the questions we ask relate to the way your child thinks about the school.

This research is open to all students at your child’s school. To participate, your child will follow an internet link we send to their email to complete an online survey. If your child chooses to participate, they can receive a $10 gift card for their time.

To learn more, contact AISD Director of Planning, Dr. Raechel French at raechel.french@austinisd.org or sign your child up to participate: https://bit.ly/CAUSE24engl

Class Ring and Graduation Orders

As we approach a significant time in our students’ lives, I invite you to visit Herff Jones to place your orders for class rings and graduation items. For our Junior parents (Class of 2026), it’s time to celebrate your child’s achievements with a class ring. Meanwhile, Senior parents (Class of 2025) can explore essential graduation items, including the approved cap and gown which is required for participation in the ceremony. Seniors can also puchase graduation announcements, senior memory books, and a variety of Class of 2025 swag. If any senior is experiencing financial difficulties regarding their cap and gown, please encourage them to speak with Ms. Nix or their counselor for assistance.

Let’s make these milestones memorable!
