The past two weeks on campus have certainly had a different energy, compared to the end of October. In the wake of the protests we experienced, I feel that our school has come together in a way that was both powerful and necessary. The concern over social media posts and possible threats against the school the week before the protests had our campus on edge. A protest could have sent us further over that edge, but our students responded beautifully — showing compassion, unity, and a commitment to the values of love, inclusion, and support. It was truly inspiring to see students come together across campus, sharing messages of acceptance and standing firm in the face of hate. I also want to thank everyone for staying away from the protestors and not engaging with them, denying them the audience they were hoping for. Your restraint was a testament to our collective maturity and strength as a school community. I also appreciate the parents who came out to support our students. Our students continue to amaze me, and I am incredibly proud of how they handled such a challenging situation.
I’ve received several questions from parents and community members about why the protestors were allowed to be so close to our school and why we didn’t move them. I completely understand these concerns and wish I had the ability to relocate or remove them. Unfortunately, my hands are tied in this regard. Protestors like those who visited are well-versed in their First Amendment rights, which guarantee their ability to assemble and express their views in public spaces. Our campus is bordered by a public sidewalk, and as such, they have the legal right to be there. While I recognize that the messages they were sharing were difficult for many of us to hear, it's important to understand that protestors often craft their statements as a form of free expression, rather than as personal attacks. That being said, I know our students don’t care about the legal nuances—they only hear the hate in the words. Once again, though, I am so proud of how our students rose above this, showing that the values of support, inclusion, and unity are what define us. The "MAC way" was truly on display.
As we move forward, I want to take a moment to commemorate Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Native American peoples. At McCallum, we are dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of the indigenous communities who have shaped our nation’s history. This month, we’ll delve into the unique customs, languages, and art forms that are central to Native American heritage, while also reflecting on the challenges these communities have faced and the triumphs they have achieved. Let’s take this opportunity to appreciate and recognize the enduring spirit and resilience of Native American peoples and their vital role in shaping the fabric of our nation.
Thank you for being a part of this incredible school community, and for helping make McCallum a place of strength, respect, and inclusivity.

Thank you to the parents who brought in some snacks and drinks for our staff this past week. We always love little pick me ups through out the year. Education is not an easy gig and I love that our community gets that and supports our school!
Enroll Austin is now open. All families are encouraged to complete this process as soon as possible. Go to https://www.austinisd.org/enroll for more information.
AP Payments are DUE!! If you have not taken care of your AP balance, then please reach out to Lisa Gorzell immediately.
Class attendance continues to be a focus for our campus and we need your support. Please talk to your students about the importance of being on time for class and being mentally present during the lesson.
The end of the year is approaching which means final exams are right around the corner. It is never too late for a student to get help. Please encourage your student to reach out to their teacher or another adult on campus if they need support.
Thank you to all the parents who "adopted" one of our staff members this school year as a secret pal. Your notes and gifts throughout the year are greatly appreciated!!!
