Title One Annual Meeting Wednesday August 27, 5:00pm Back to School Night Wednesday August 27, 5:30
Dear Covington Families,
We can’t wait to see you this Tuesday as we kick off an exciting new school year! Our
amazing teachers have been busy getting their classrooms ready and are eager to welcome your students back with open arms and big smiles.
Students can now view their schedules on Parent Self-Serve, but we will also have printed
copies available on Tuesday morning to make their first day as smooth as possible. Locker and Chromebook distribution will begin on Thursday, August 21st.
This year brings many changes across the state and our district, and while change can
sometimes feel overwhelming, please know we’re in this together. We'll be here every step of the way to support you and your student as we navigate this new year as one strong, connected community.
We’re also excited to offer more opportunities for parents to get involved. Whether you’re volunteering on campus or supporting from home, there will be plenty of ways to contribute to the vibrant culture and success of our school.
As part of our updated cell phone policy, students are now required to store their cell phones in their laptop bags, lockers, or purses during school hours. This practice helps minimize distractions, promote focused learning, and create a respectful environment for all students and staff.
Please take a few moments to read through this newsletter, it includes important details
about drop-off and pick-up routines, cell phone policies, campus contacts, Open House, and more. If you have any questions before or during the first days of school, don’t hesitate to reach out.
We’re so glad you are a part of the Covington community, let’s make it a great year together!
Your Principal, Maddox
We are so happy to be back at Covington Middle School this year to serve students and families!
We want to let you know about some processes the Covington Middle School Counseling Department has implemented in order to help ensure student success and safety!
Referral Process for Students to See a Counselor:
Students will have paper and electronic copies of the referral form to see their counselor. This form should be submitted during lunch, before school, or after school. A counselor will see them within one school day during COLT time (Advisory). Counselors will not be available during scheduled class times unless it is an emergency. Students are not allowed to come to the counseling office without a pass or without a counselor picking them up. If it is an emergency, teachers will message a counselor so that a counselor can pick up the student without a referral being required.
Parents - You are able to refer your child to see the counselor if you feel they could benefit from speaking with one. Here is the link to do so (for emergencies, please call 9-1-1):

Schedule Changes:
Student schedules will not be changed the first week of school (unless the student was incorrectly placed in a core class). The process for an elective schedule change will be explained in next week’s newsletter. This will give students time to adapt to their classes, learn the “ins and outs” of where everything is located, and get a handle on things before classes are possibly moved around, making it difficult for them to navigate.
Gifted and Talented (GT) Referral Window
Families, teachers, or staff may nominate students for the GT screening process. The referral window for the 2025-26 school year is August 19 - October 17, 2025. Contact Debra Austrum, GT Advocate, at (512) 414-3276 x59860 or debra.austrum@austinisd.org, if you have questions about the process.

Raising Awareness About Health and Hygiene
It's important to have open conversations with young girls about the natural rhythms of their bodies and how to maintain good hygiene during these changes.
While it's a natural part of life, unexpected moments can sometimes feel uncomfortable. Let's ensure our girls have the encouragement and essentials they need during these new experiences. For parents of boys, don't shy away from discussing these normal changes, as many boys have friends, sisters, or even mothers who may appreciate their understanding and support.
Be prepared for unexpected moments! It's helpful to keep lockers stocked with essentials like extra clothes and necessary hygiene items.
Remember to refresh your supplies regularly, especially before school and throughout the day.
Avoid disposing of these items in toilets—always use the trash bin instead. Using a tracking app can help estimate timing and plan ahead.
If discomfort or irregularities occur, seeking advice from a doctor is a good idea.
Don’t forget to wash hands.
Feminine products are readily available for students in the event they need them.
