Skylar Lee and Principal Maddox digging in to prepare for next Monday!
Dear Covington Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! It’s hard to believe, but we are officially down to the final two weeks of the school year.
This Monday, I’m excited to share that Skylar Lee will be serving as Principal for the Day—a well-earned opportunity and a fun way to kick off a busy week here at Covington!
Please note that on Monday, May 20, all students are required to turn in their Chromebooks and chargers. Devices will be collected during the school day, and families may be contacted if any device is missing or returned with intentional damage. We kindly ask that you speak with your child and ensure they bring both items to school that day.
In addition to the Chromebook collection, we’ll be celebrating our students through awards assemblies next week to recognize academic achievement and attendance from the 3rd quarter. These events are an important part of our school culture and a great way to honor students' efforts and accomplishments.
Looking ahead to next school year, we’re thrilled to announce a new school-wide initiative designed to deepen our sense of community, belonging, and school pride. Inspired by the Ron Clark Academy, we plan to introduce a House System at Covington, expanding on the faculty and staff team competition we piloted this year.
Starting next year, all students and staff will be sorted into one of eight Houses, each named after a breed of horse to stay true to our COLT-S identity, for example, House of Mustang or House of Friesian. Each House will have its own color, symbol, and crest, and students will participate in school-wide competitions, challenges, and quarterly celebrations to earn points and represent their House.
This initiative is about more than fun—it’s about:
Fostering a stronger sense of connection across grade levels
Building positive school culture
Promoting teamwork, leadership, and school spirit
Encouraging positive behavior and academic engagement
Creating more opportunities for parent involvement in a meaningful way
This is a major undertaking, and we’re excited to begin laying the groundwork. We’ll be sharing more information in the near future about how families can support and participate in this exciting new tradition.
As always, thank you for your continued support and for being such a vital part of our Covington community. Let’s finish strong!
Your Proud Principal,
Cedric Maddox

Routines: Daily attendance routines can reduce stress, increase your child’s self-confidence and lay a foundation for good attendance in later grades.
Engagement: Participation in school helps your child connect with other children and adults and get excited about learning.
Access to Resources: Schools can give you access to meals, physical and mental health care and other supports, and fun enrichment activities (sports, clubs, music, afterschool and summer programs, etc.).
Learning: Children learn best from hand-on activities and through meaningful interactions with their teacher and other students.
PARENTS & STUDENTS – Interested in helping make your community more physical activity friendly?
Covington Middle school is taking part in the Active Middle School Communities Project with UTHealth. This research study looks at what helps or makes it harder for middle school communities, including our neighborhood, to be physically active.
Current parents and students (who live within the school attendance zone) are invited to participate and will receive a gift card for doing so. Find more information in the flyer and/or consent forms attached.
Please fill out a consent form and the project staff will contact you. If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Granado or call the study staff at (512) 482-6152.

"Hello Covington Families,
My name is Fatima Lozano and I am a Program Coordinator for Con Mi MADRE. Con Mi MADRE is a non-profit organization serving both AISD and DVISD campuses where we work to deliver a social-emotional learning and college readiness curriculum to female identifying and nonbinary students from 6th grade through their undergraduate college years. We implement a dual-generational program that includes the parents; meaning out-of-school events like college trips, conferences, and fairs. We currently have open enrollment for our cohorts at Covington Middle School for our 6th-8th grade students. We have attached our link for our application.
