Maddox's Message

Mr. Maddox

Hello Covington Families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving week, filled with time spent with family and friends, delicious food, fellowship, and football! As we return, it’s hard to believe we only have three weeks until winter break, but this is the season of excitement and activity.

Over the next three weeks, we have several exciting events planned, including soccer and basketball games as well as our Fine Arts holiday productions. Please make sure to check our school calendar to stay up to date on all the happenings and come out to support our students.

If you haven’t had a chance yet, I encourage you to sign up to volunteer some time at Covington. Whether it’s a half day, an hour, or even just 30 minutes, your presence makes a meaningful difference. Not only does it support our school community, but it also shows our students how much we care about their success. You are always welcome at Covington, and we appreciate every moment you can spare to be part of our school family.

Over the next two weeks, your child will take the Middle of the Year (MOY) MAP Assessment in both math and ELA. This is a personalized test designed to measure your child’s progress since the Beginning of the Year (BOY) MAP Assessment. The goal of MAP testing is to identify areas of growth and areas where additional support may be needed, ensuring your child is on track to meet their academic goals.

This week, your child’s math and ELA teachers will provide them with a report that includes their score, growth from the BOY MAP, and a goal to work toward on the MOY Map. While we at Covington encourage your child with affirmations, accolades, and incentives, your involvement and enthusiasm about their performance hold the most significance.

Over the next two weeks, I encourage you to sit down with your child and ask them these questions about the MAP Assessment to show your support:

  • What are your goals for the MAP test, and how are you preparing to reach them?

  • How do you feel about your score from the Beginning of the Year MAP Assessment?

  • What growth are you aiming for, and what steps will you take to meet your goal?

  • How can I help support you as you prepare for your MAP test?

Thank you for being such an important part of our Covington community. Together, we can ensure our students have the support they need to finish the semester strong and ready for success in the new year!

Your proud principal,

Cedric Maddox

Attendance Matters

R.E.A.L

  • Routines: Daily attendance routines can reduce stress, increase your child’s self-confidence and lay a foundation for good attendance in later grades.

  • Engagement:  Participation in school helps your child connect with other children and adults and get excited about learning.

  • Access to Resources:  Schools can give you access to meals, physical and mental health care and other supports, and fun enrichment activities (sports, clubs, music, afterschool and summer programs, etc.).

  • Learning:  Children learn best from hand-on activities and through meaningful interactions with their teacher and other students.

Student Perspective Piece, by Cadence Rangel

"Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything"

― George Bernard Shaw

This quote means that sometimes, you have to make a compromise to be happy, and the outcome can be beautiful and creative.

I am Cadence Rangel and I will be writing a short paragraph each week, and I hope that anyone who reads this allows them to have a great week. I know Thanksgiving is coming and we are all on our break. But I hope you are all enjoying this time, being thankful, and spending time with your families.

One-on-One Mini Meetings

Counselors are working diligently to meet with each individual student one-on-one during Mini Meetings.  These meetings are designed to create a relationship with the student and his/her counselor, as well as to see if there are any needs/supports counselors can provide or help facilitate to help students be more successful in their school and home lives.
