We’re in our last two weeks of the Fall semester. Let’s finish strong!

Before we dive in, I want to say thank you to all of our Special Education staff! Last week we celebrated Special Education Staff Appreciation Week. Check out our social media for features on two of our incredible educators.

Now, let’s get into what happened last week.

  • Last week I celebrated the ribbon cutting of two 2022 Bond projects at Cook and Williams elementary schools. Thanks to our voters, these schools received significant updates to their campuses changing from open-concept floor plans to learning spaces with full walls and doors between learning areas.
  • Wednesday, I joined officials from the City of Austin and other local agencies for the Winter Weather Seminar, hosted by the City of Austin Emergency Management. A ton of work goes into planning and supporting the community in winter weather events, including how decision-making occurs between the “Big 5”; Austin ISD, City of Austin, Travis County, UT Austin and ACC. This seminar aligned agencies in the region so we’re prepared if winter weather disrupts our operations. And before it gets too cold, check out our inclement weather protocols so you know how we make decisions.
  • On Friday, I met with about 70 students from Austin and Bowie high schools and Akins and Navarro early college high schools as part of the Ready, Set, Teach program. One of my favorite parts of my job is finding Austin ISD alumni when I’m out at our schools. This program helps us grow our own educators and ensure there will be many more Austin ISD alumni in the future!

It’s a big week. Let’s get to it.

  • Tuesday, I’m meeting with PBS Austin to do an interview on the school consolidations and student reassignment plan approved by our Board of Trustees last month. We’re already working through transition planning and are committed to strong communication with the community.
  • Tuesday, I’ll be announcing appointments for principals at campuses affected by the school consolidation and student reassignment plan. I am committed to giving families time to plan and knowing who is leading a campus is a key factor in deciding where to send your child. I hope providing this information before break gives families time to understand their options before the first enrollment window opens in January.
  • Thursday, we’ll have a Board Information Session where we’ll give an update on the progress of Dobie, Webb and Burnet middle schools. We’ll also provide a presentation on our College, Career and Military Readiness progress as part of the Scorecard.

I’m looking forward to a productive and successful final two weeks of the semester. Thank you for all you do to support our students every day.

Check out our Austin ISD calendar for more details on what’s happening in the district. And if there’s anything that needs to be on my radar, let me know.
