Over the weekend, our Austin High School volleyball team won the state semi-final match in Houston and is headed to the state championship this weekend in Garland. The last time Austin High School’s volleyball team headed to state was in 1992, when they earned the Class 5A state championship. Let’s repeat history! Congratulations to our Maroons!

We are in the final stretch before Fall Break and have a packed week.

Let’s review what happened last week.

  • Last week I shared that we were going to have a Board Work Session on Thursday. Due to time constraints, we weren’t able to hold the meeting, but I recorded a presentation for the community and trustees to better understand the turnaround plans and proposed closures. To learn more, view the presentation on YouTube.
  • Friday afternoon, we released the Recommended School Closures & Programmatic Reassignments, which proposes the closure of 10 schools due to state-mandated TAPs and programmatic moves. This has been a long journey for our community and I’m grateful for the feedback that led us to this final proposal. Check out the Austin ISD Consolidation website to learn more.
  • Saturday morning, I joined Tomball ISD and San Angelo ISD superintendents for a panel at the Texas Tribune Festival. We had a great conversation about student achievement and how to prevent state interventions to keep local control. I truly believe the work we’re doing is positioning our community well to keep our Austin ISD values in our schools.

We have a lot going on this week.

  • Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, I’ll join the Board of Trustees for Lone Star Governance training.
  • Wednesday, I’ll spend the day with our district leaders and campus principals at ATX Bridge. This monthly meeting is a great opportunity for our leaders districtwide to align. This month, we’ll get an update from our legal department and learn more about the Teacher Incentive Allotment.
  • Thursday evening, we’ll have our Public Hearing about the 24 TAPs, then our Board Regular Voting Meeting. After nine months of planning, our trustees will hear final feedback and take a vote on my recommendation for the first part of this work. We’ll continue working with our trustees to bring a plan for boundaries and consolidations associated with balancing enrollment back for a vote in the future.

As we close out this final week before Fall Break, I hope everyone is able to rest and recharge during the week off before we head back to finish off the semester strong.

Check out our Austin ISD calendar for more details on what’s happening in the district. And if there’s anything that needs to be on my radar, let me know.
