Matias's Weekly

Happy 13th week of school! Believe it or not, we are just five school weeks out from the end of the first semester (and the start of winter break). I’m so proud of our students for prioritizing their studies and working hard each and every day!

As you know, Proposition A passed last week, enabling us to give raises to 85% of district teachers and staff. I want to express my deep gratitude to the Austin voters for investing in our public school teachers, our essential public school employees, our students and our community’s future.

Last Friday, I got to be a part of the Travis Early College High School Groundbreaking Ceremony. I’m so excited for the Travis community and all that this $252M full modernization project will mean for them.

Finally, this week is National School Psychology Week. School psychologists partner with families, teachers, school administrators and other professionals to create safe, healthy and supportive learning environments for students. They apply expertise in mental health, learning and behavior to help children and youth succeed socially, behaviorally, emotionally and academically. Please join me in celebrating all of our school psychologists in the Special Education Department who help Austin ISD's students, families, and communities every day!

Where I’ll be and who I’m Meeting

Monday, November 11

This morning, I have a touchpoint with Principal Vallejo who leads Govalle Elementary School. I will then move into a standing meeting with my senior staff. We always start with discussing anything that may have happened over the weekend that requires immediate action. After that, we will progress the work on the budget, 6th grade transition plan for Martin and Mendez Middle Schools and enrollment. In the afternoon, there is a Special Board Grievance Hearing. Afterwards, Board President Arati Singh and I will meet with our Lone Star Governance Coach, Ashley Paz.

From 4–5 p.m. today, I will be joining the Austin ISD Board of Trustees for a dialogue session to hear staff members’ perspective on the district’s priorities, including topics like our scorecard and budget priorities. Following the dialogue session, I will have a one-on-one meeting with Trustee Gonzales. In the evening, I will be attending the Ad Hoc Joint Community Budget Committee meeting. I’m so thankful for the commitment of our committee members, who have given up many hours over many weeks to be thought partners on the budget reduction work.

Tuesday, November 12

First thing this morning I have a one-on-one meeting with Trustee Whitely-Chu. I will then attend the Native American Heritage month kick off event at the Central Office, where I will be giving the opening remarks. I’m super excited to celebrate and honor the rich culture, traditions and contributions of Native American communities. Aftwards, I have a quality assurance/quality control meeting to progress the work related to the TEA Agreed Order. In the afternoon, I have a one-on-one meeting with Michelle Wallis, Executive Director of the Office of Innovation and Development, followed by a governance meeting with the board officers. The rest of the afternoon is devoted to meeting with my senior leadership team to discuss the budget plan, which will be presented at the November 21 board meeting. After attending the District Advisory Committee meeting, I will head to the airport. For the next few days, I will be attending the Texas Urban Council Annual Retreat.

Friday, November 15

After coming back to Austin in the afternoon, I’ll spend time in the office, meeting with my staff to progress work on priority items and initiatives.

This evening, I will be attending the Boys & Girls Club of the Austin Area Great Futures Gala. I appreciate their partnership in providing after school enrichment programs at many Austin ISD campuses, and the wonderful work they’re doing throughout Austin.

Saturday, November 16

This morning, I hope to attend the Little East Art Show at Blackshear Elementary School. This event will showcase the incredible talent of our local artists and promises to be an inspiring day.
