Matias's Weekly

I can’t believe we’re in the 33rd week of the school year. I’m so proud of all the hard work our students and staff have been putting in all year long, both in and out of the classroom. From academic achievements to winning fine arts competitions to athletic victories, there are so many amazing things happening on our campuses right now. We have just five weeks left in the spring semester. Let’s finish strong, y’all!

On Earth Day last week, I got to celebrate some incredibly talented fourth-grade students from Linder Elementary School who won the CapMetro/Creative Action’s Art on the Bus challenge. Their artwork is dedicated to sustainability and preservation of our planet, with the theme “Protect Our Wild Neighbors.” Be on the lookout for the CapMetro bus displaying our students’ creative work.

The bus displays designs of houses, butterflies, and animals under a banner that reads 'Clean Air for Tomorrow. Imagined by Student Artists from Linder Elementary.

Where I’ll be and who I’m Meeting

Monday, April 28

This morning, I’ll be at the Oak Springs Elementary School Groundbreaking Ceremony. As a part of the 2022 Bond Program, Oak Springs is receiving a $47.6 million full modernization! From there, I’ll travel to City Hall to meet with a council member, Board President Lynn Boswell and Board Vice President Kathryn Whitley-Chu. In the afternoon, I have my weekly Senior Staff meeting, where we’ll progress the work on campus turnaround plans, the budget and other district initiatives. Afterward, I have a one-on-one meeting with Katrina Montgomery, Interim Chief Financial Officer.

Tuesday, April 29

I’ll be visiting a few campuses this morning to see the great things going on in our classrooms. When I get into the office, I have a rescheduled meeting with the principals of the McCallum and Navarro vertical teams. I committed to meeting with all principals in this format to keep them informed and to receive their feedback on the first draft of the consolidations roadmap. In the afternoon, I have a quality assurance meeting ahead of the next TEA Agreed Order data submission. Afterward, I’ll be joining the Texas Urban Council Superintendent Meeting, and then meet with Trustee Foster for our one-on-one. This evening, I’ll attend the ACC Chancellor’s Reception and then head to my daughter’s track meet.

Wednesday, April 30

I’m pumped that today I get to attend the Día de los Niños y Libros celebration at Ridgetop Elementary School. After the event, I’ll travel to meet with Mayor Kirk Watson and Board President Boswell. When I get into the office, I’ll have a one-on-one meeting with Chief Technology Officer Oscar Rodriguez. In the afternoon, I have a meeting with Ken Zarafis and Trasell Underwood from Ed Austin, followed by a principal interview.

Thursday, May 1

The first thing today is a meeting with the vertical team lead principals, followed by the Principal Roundtables meeting. I say this all the time, but I treasure this time to speak with principals, and know the pivotal role each of them plays in the success of our students and schools. Afterward, I’ll meet with the Salute planning team, including with student leaders who will be hosting the event. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with the graduation planning team, and then attend a meeting to discuss real estate. After a principal interview, I have a one-on-one meeting with Interim Chief of Staff La Kesha Drinks. The last thing today is a check-in meeting with the Leadership Institute planning team. Leadership Institute happens each July and is our kickoff conference for all of our campus/central office leaders to align on the vision and priorities for the next school year. It’s also a time for all of us to engage in professional learning around the Leadership Framework competencies: Instructional Leader, Culture Builder, Talent Developer, and Executive Leader.

Friday, May 2

I’ll start off the day with board officers at our regular governance meeting. This will be followed by a budget planning meeting with my team and a few trustees. I’ll be meeting with a couple of principals after, and then jump on my regular principal update call. Afterward, I have a principal interview. There are quite a few things happening this evening, and I’m going to try to make it to one or more of them: Lively Middle School’s Mean Girls Jr., Akins Early College High School’s Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, and Austin High School Ballet Folklorico’s Gran Show de Primavera: Vueltas.

Weekend

On Saturday, I hope to attend the Families as Partners end-of-year recognition at Padron Elementary School.
