✍️ A Message from Matias

Welcome back, everyone! I hope you had the chance to relax over the break and enjoy some well-deserved time to rest and reconnect with your loved ones.

As we kick off this final stretch of the 2025–26 school year, we remain focused on student achievement and ensuring high academic outcomes for every single student. Our system is making significant, measurable progress, and that doesn't happen by accident.

I want to extend a massive thank you for your dedication and your relentless pursuit of excellence for our students. Whether you are in a classroom, an office, or out in the community, each and every one of you plays a critical role in the student experience. We are in this together, and I am beyond grateful that I get to do this work alongside you.

Let’s give it our all for this final stretch!

📍Where I’ll Be & Who I’m Meeting

Monday, Mar 23, 2026

We’re kicking off Monday morning at Webb Middle School for a leadership huddle to connect, debrief on any pressing issues and map out our plans for the week. After lunch, I’ll be sitting down with CFO Katrina Montgomery to prepare for our upcoming budget workshop. From there, I’ll connect with President Boswell for our regular touchpoint. Later in the afternoon, I’m meeting with senior leaders to dive into the progress and status of three of our middle schools: Dobie, Webb and Burnet. I’ll also be joining a meeting with the Texas Urban Council (TUC) to collaborate with fellow urban superintendents on K-12 trends and research. To wrap up a productive day, I’ll be meeting with representatives from the Bouldin Creek Neighborhood Association to discuss the repurposing process.

Tuesday morning is going to be a highlight as I head out to visit schools as part of the Teacher of the Year (TOY) program—it is always so inspiring to see our world-class educators in action! Following lunch, I’ll be joining a principal interview. Afterward, I’ve carved out some focused work time to prepare for Thursday’s Board Voting meeting. I’ll then pivot to back-to-back sessions with our summer transitions and enrollment teams for some "QA/QC"—quality assurance and quality control. These meetings are a great way for me to provide direct feedback and direction on the initiatives that are most important to our district. We will close out the day with a Board Work Session for a deep dive into our district priorities including Academic Vision & Framework, Budget, and Transition Plans.

Wednesday, Mar 25, 2026

I’m starting Wednesday meeting with Latino community leaders from organizations like HABLA and LULAC; their partnership is absolutely vital in our service to our students. I’ll then head out to lunch with other area superintendents to stay connected on regional issues. In the afternoon, I’ll have my regular check-in with CFO Katrina Montgomery, followed by a principal interview. To finish the day, I am looking forward to attending the Texas Reads, Texas Leads (TXRL) meeting at the Holdsworth Center. This is such an important statewide initiative, focusing on science-based K-3 literacy plans to ensure our youngest learners have the foundation they need to thrive.

Thursday, Mar 26, 2026

Thursday kicks off with essential prep time with Chief of Staff, La Kesha Drinks, to get us ready for a big day ahead. After lunch, the bulk of my afternoon will be dedicated to final preparations for the evening’s Board Voting Meeting. In between, I’ll be jumping on the monthly TEA Superintendent call to stay up to speed on state-level updates. We will end the day with the Board Voting Meeting, where we’ll provide several key updates on our transition plans, the budget, Mendez Middle School and the Community Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC).

Friday, Mar 27, 2026

We’re finishing the week strong on Friday, starting with a real estate check-in followed by my weekly touchpoint with my direct reports. For lunch, I am honored to attend the Annual Texans Care for Children Luncheon, celebrating over 40 years of their incredible advocacy and solutions for kids and families across our state. I’ll close out the day with our regular principal update. It’s always a great opportunity to connect, debrief on the week and prepare for what’s next. A huge thank you to all our principals for everything you do for our students!

Enjoy your weekend!
