Matias's Weekly

Happy 6th week of the spring semester! Did you know that February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month? Our CTE programs help students develop essential skills for the workforce. Whether students are learning a trade, gaining hands-on experience in a specific field, or preparing for technology, healthcare, or construction, our CTE programs equip them with the tools they need to succeed after graduation.

In case you missed my message on social media, I wanted to link it here. Please know that we are here for you and are doing everything we can to support our students, staff and families. Our leadership team will stay on top of any policies that may impact our district and we’ll share those details if there is an impact to our services.

It’s still a month out, but I would love your help spreading the word to folks in your network. Our Austin ISD Teacher Career Fair will be taking place on Saturday, Mar. 29 from 9 a.m–noon at Austin Southpark Hotel. Don’t be shy about letting them know that Austin ISD is hands down the best place to work! RSVP here.

Last week, I got to attend our secondary counselor meeting and celebrate Murchison Middle School counselors, Robin Johnson, Courtney Cardosa and Kristin Wilson. I’m thankful for their hard work and heart work, leading the way for all secondary schools in Austin ISD by receiving the CREST award.

Finally, this week is School Resource Officer (SRO) Appreciation Week here in Austin ISD. Our SROs work tirelessly to keep our campuses safe — and they do so at all hours of the day and night. If you happen to run into an SRO this week, please take a moment to convey your appreciation for their important work.

Where I’ll be and who I’m Meeting

Monday, February 10

Speaking of CTE Month — I’ll be taking my truck this morning to Northeast ECHS’s garage, where their auto repair and collision/paint programs are housed. For the foreseeable future, I’ll be putting my truck in the trusty hands of our CTE students, who will be giving it a total makeover. I am so pumped!

When I get into the office, I’ll have my standing senior staff meeting where we’ll discuss Map Growth Reading Data, Budget, Principal’s Roundtable, and Legislative Update. In the afternoon, I’ll be meeting with the Executive Leadership Team to update them on district priorities and initiatives. The last appointment for the day is a one-on-one meeting with Trustee Kauffman.

Tuesday, February 11

This morning, I’ll be attending the annual Teacher of the Year Breakfast. It’s a great privilege to stand before a room full of such talented and dedicated teachers, and I know I’ll leave the breakfast thoroughly inspired. I’ll return to the office for a meeting with the LBJ ECH Interim Principal to coordinate the Feb. 19 Staff and Community meetings. Next, I have a one-on-one meeting with Brandi Hosack, Chief Officer of Talent Strategy and a Texas Urban Council Superintendent meeting. I will then head to a meeting with the staff of Burnet MS, followed by a Burnet community meeting. As we’re continuing to develop our district initiative around middle schools, it is so important for me to hear from staff and families.

Wednesday, February 12

I’ll start off the day with a one-on-one meeting with Dr. Stephanie Hawley, Chief of Organizational Transformation, followed by a one-on-one meeting with Katrina Montgomery, Interim Chief Financial Officer. In the afternoon, I have a Texas Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (TALAS) Board Meeting. This evening, I will attend the retirement celebration of former Austin ISD Trustee Geronimo Rodriguez.

Thursday, February 13

It’s Career Day at Odom Elementary School. I’ve been looking forward to this event for a long time. There’s nothing like getting to spend time with the future leaders of our country, and doing my part to spark their curiosity and plant the seeds of aspirations. In the afternoon, I’ll be convening the Special Education and IT teams for our quality assurance meeting ahead of this month’s data submission to the TEA. The rest of the afternoon will be spent meeting with my teams to prepare for the Board Information Session this evening. Tonight, we’ll be discussing goals and constraints around TSI readiness and PK-2 teachers’ instructional practices score.

Friday, February 14

This morning, I’ll spend some time looking through Goal Progress Measure and Constraint Progress Measure board monitoring reports for the March Information Session. Today, I’ll meet with Dr. Jacob Reach, Chief Officer, Governmental Relations & Board Services, Kenneth Walker, General Counsel, and Edna Butts, Director Intergovernmental Relations & Policy Oversight, for our regular legislative check-in. This afternoon, I hope to attend the 2nd Annual Life Skills Valentine’s Party at Covington MS.

Sunday, February 16

I’ll be attending Ebenezer Third Baptist Church’s Sesquicentennial celebration. Many Ebenezer members have served in Austin ISD, including those a few of our schools are named after.
