I hope you’re all staying safe and cozy during this cold snap. My absolute top priority is making sure every one of our students, staff members and families is tucked in safe and sound.

We’ve been huddling up with our partners in the "Big 5"—which includes leaders from the city of Austin, Travis County, Austin Community College and The University of Texas—to keep a close eye on the forecast and how it might affect our schools. Due to the anticipated extreme temperatures and unsafe road conditions, all Austin ISD offices and schools were closed on Monday, Jan. 26, and Tuesday, Jan. 27.

We will continue to monitor the weather and receive updates from the National Weather Service throughout the week.

Stay Updated:

    • Check the AustinISD website or follow us on social media for the latest news.
    • Monitor DriveTexas.org for real-time road conditions.
    • Visit the City of Austin website for general winter safety updates.

Take care of yourselves, look out for your neighbors and stay warm, Austin. We’re in this together!

📍Where I’ll Be & Who I’m Meeting

Monday, Jan 26, 2026

With our offices and schools closed today due to the weather, I wanted to give you a quick look at what my day looks like behind the scenes. First thing this morning, I’m jumping on a call with our senior leadership team to stay on top of any urgent issues. We’re keeping a close eye on our facilities, road conditions, and transportation logistics to make sure everything is ready for a safe return to school. Many of our staff live outside the Austin Area so we have to consider all of Central Texas as we make decisions.

Later in the afternoon, I’ll check back in with the "Big 5" for a final weather update. Immediately following that meeting, other regional superintendents and I connected to understand each other's plans. Here in central Texas we’re all connected and share staff and students which makes it very difficult to operate if we are not aligned as we make these winter weather decisions.

Tuesday, Jan 27, 2026

I started my morning meeting with fellow education leaders from Region 13. It’s always good to touch base with our neighbors. From there, I shifted gears to prepare for a meeting with TEA to discuss critical updates, including the Special Education Order and Turnaround Plans (TAPs).

Wednesday, Jan 28, 2026

Most of my day today is dedicated to prep work for Thursday’s Board Voting Session. The team and I are busy putting the finishing touches on our presentations—it’s a heavy lift, but we’re moving the needle on some really important work for our district. I’ll end the day at TEA sharing an update on all our work with the agency.

Thursday, Jan 29, 2026

Thursday is a full one! I’m starting with our Talent Strategy and Operations teams to discuss some updates regarding the Yellow Jacket Stadium at Eastside ECHS. Later, I’ll catch up with Zack Craddock from Third Future Schools for an update on Mendez, followed by my regular check-in with Trustee Hunter.

The evening is dedicated to our Board Regular Voting Meeting where I’ll be presenting updates on:

Enrollment & Recruitment: A top priority for both myself and the board.

Turnaround Plans (TAPs): Specific updates for our three middle school restarts: Burnet, Dobie, and Webb as well as the other TAPs submitted in the fall semester.

Friday, Jan 30, 2026

I’ll hit the ground running Friday with a real estate check-in with our Finance and Operations leaders. Following my weekly meeting with my direct reports, we’ll hold a focused discussion regarding Blackshear and Oak Springs.

At noon, I’m looking forward to our Principal Update to hear directly from our campus leaders. My afternoon will be spent hosting city officials for the Executive Leadership Collaborative to discuss behavioral health, followed by a meeting with City Manager T.C. Broadnax. I’ll close out the week with a Board Special Meeting Friday evening, which will include topics that are all held in closed session.
