There are things that truly "fill my cup" and keep me excited about how incredible our school district is.  Two of these things occurred last week!  I was able to participate in our first full modernization ribbon cutting  from the 2022 Bond Program at Wooten Elementary.  It was incredible seeing our students, staff and community celebrate this huge investment in public education.  In AISD we are truly re-envisioning  the future of our learning spaces.

Superintendent Matias Segura stands at a podium holding a microphone on a stage, smiling as he speaks; two people seated behind him applaud, and a large screen reads “Superintendent Matias Segura — Formal Remarks.”
A large crowd fills a bright school gymnasium for an event, applauding as a videographer films on a tripod-mounted camera in the foreground; rows of seated attendees extend across the gym and adjoining seating area.
Elementary students stand on a school stage with hands over their hearts near a microphone while a large seated audience of students watches; blue and white balloons and U.S. flags are displayed at the side of the stage.

I was also able to spend time celebrating our amazing educators.  I visited campuses to honor our educators for their unwavering service and hard work. It doesn't get much better than that!

Please join me in a huge celebration for two of our very own who were recognized as finalists for the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards:

- Megan Vasquez, Physical Education Teacher at Becker Elementary School.

- Alasin DeVeny, Special Education Life Skills Teacher at Joslin Elementary School.

Seeing the impact these educators have on their students is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Congratulations to you both!

Where I’ll be and who I’m Meeting

Monday, Jan 19, 2026

We will begin the week by taking a moment of reflection and service. As a reminder, all Austin ISD schools and offices will be closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I hope you find this time restorative as we honor Dr. King’s enduring legacy.

Tuesday, Jan 20, 2026

I’ll kick off Tuesday by huddling with my Senior Leadership team to ensure we are aligned and prepared for the busy week ahead. After lunch, Dr. Maxwell, Assistant Superintendent of Academics and I will be speaking at a partner convening to share updates on our work this year.

To wrap up the workday, I’ll check in with the Transition Planning team to monitor our progress for the school transitions slated for the 26-27 school year, before closing the day with my regular check-in with Trustee Kauffman.

Wednesday, Jan 21, 2026

Wednesday morning starts with a "deep dive" into master scheduling training alongside our leaders at the Secondary Principal Level Meeting, facilitated by TASB. Midday, I’m looking forward to a networking lunch with other regional superintendents. These moments to lean on one another and share the unique challenges of our roles are invaluable.

In the afternoon, I’ll be meeting with Trustee Quintana for our scheduled check-in. I will then shift into a meeting to discuss the turnaround work at Burnet, Dobie, and Webb. I’ll end the day by speaking at the School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) meeting. I’ll provide a brief District update, including opportunities for SHAC members to support District initiatives.

Thursday, Jan 22, 2026

Thursday is all about looking ahead at our growth. I’ll start by meeting with our Enrollment team and steering committee to review our strategic, actionable plan for the coming years. This will be followed by a check-in with Trustee de Urioste and a meeting with the Austin Ed Fund Board. We are so fortunate to have such a committed group of advocates supporting our district.

After lunch, I will connect with Trustee Singh for our regular check-in. To conclude the day, I will join the Board of Trustees for a Governance Planning Meeting as we continue to discuss and prepare for future board meetings.

Friday, Jan 23, 2026

I’ll start the final day of the week with my Chief of Staff, Lakesha Drinks, followed by a collective touchpoint with all my direct reports. For lunch, I’m excited to join the E3 Alliance Board at the Austin Chamber Annual Meeting.

The afternoon will be spent connecting with our Officers that include the leaders from the FInance, Operations, Technology and Talent/Strategy Divisions. I’ll close out the week by attending the Council of Great City Schools' (CGCS) Executive Committee Meeting. It is truly a privilege to lead and learn alongside some of the most respected K-12 educational leaders in the country.

Recognize our amazing staff each month by submitting a RAVE!
