It’s November and we have a ton to do in the next two weeks.

Let’s review what happened last week.

  • On Tuesday, we announced a major update to our school consolidation and boundary change plan to postpone a vote on boundary changes and school closures not related to turnaround plans or program moves. We discussed the update with the Board of Trustees on Thursday as we plan the release of the final plan on Friday, Nov. 14.
  • Tuesday evening, I met with the Education X podcast. Together with Assistant Superintendent of Academics Dr. Mary Ann Maxwell, we discussed our academic vision and the future of the district amidst the school consolidation and boundary change plan. Check out the episode to learn more.

  • Last week I also continued visiting campuses proposed for closure as part of the school consolidation and boundary change plan. I visited Bedichek Middle School and Winn, Ridgetop and Oak Springs elementary schools. I’m committed to hearing directly from our community before making any final recommendations and these meetings are an important part of our planning.

We have a lot going on this week.

  • Tuesday, I’ll meet with the District Advisory Council for our monthly meeting. This month I’ll give an update on the latest work around the turnaround plans and school consolidation and reassignment plan. We’ll also discuss updates on student discipline and the ombuds office.

  • Wednesday, I’m heading to Blackshear Elementary School to have a conversation with the community about the proposed consolidation with Oak Springs Elementary School. We’ll continue these conversations with the impacted communities before making a final recommendation.

  • We’ll also have a Board Work Session on Thursday to discuss student outcomes tied to our scorecard. We’ll use this time to ensure our trustees and administrators are aligned ahead of the final release of the turnaround plans on Friday. These turnaround plans must be approved and submitted to the Texas Education Agency by Friday, Nov. 21.

As we finish up the last two weeks before break, I want to extend my gratitude to all the students, families and staff in our community who are working together to create a future for our district.

Check out our Austin ISD calendar for more details on what’s happening in the district. And if there’s anything that needs to be on my radar, let me know!
