Welcome back to another week in Austin ISD! We’re in the thick of football season and our McCallum Knights closed out the TODAY Show’s national Friday Morning Lights series on Friday morning. Check out the video to see Carson Daly and team decked out in Knights gear!

We’re officially four weeks away from fall break and we have a lot to do before then, so let’s get started.

Let’s review what happened last week.

  • I spent much of the week focused on the draft school consolidation and boundary change plan, including engaging with the Martin Middle School, Sunset Valley and Barrington elementary schools communities. I am committed to spending as much time with our community as possible during this critical time and will continue this engagement until the Nov. 20 vote.
  • On Friday, I checked in with our principals to provide an update on the school consolidations and boundary change process and the communications plan for this week’s release of the recommended plan, which will be released on Friday. We recognize that a Halloween release is not the best timing, so we’re focused on sharing the plan in the early afternoon to ensure it doesn’t interfere with any trick-or-treating plans.

We have a packed week this week:

  • Yesterday I visited Dawson and Palm elementary schools as part of my visits to campuses proposed for closure as part of the draft school consolidation and boundary change plan. I’ll also visit Widen, Maplewood, Bryker Woods and Becker elementary schools later this week. I’ve been incredibly grateful for this time and the care our communities have for their schools. While these are difficult conversations, our communities are coming together with grace and understanding.
  • We also have a series of meetings this week to continue engagement on the draft school consolidation and boundary change plan. Tuesday, Oct. 28, will be a meeting focused on East Austin families in partnership with the Eastside Social Action Coalition. On Wednesday, we’ll have a Board Workshop where we can dig into more conversations about options to incorporate into the next iteration of the plan.
  • On Friday, I’ll join Congressman Lloyd Doggett at the ribbon-cutting of the Outdoor Wonder and Learning Center. This outdoor learning center was funded by a $2 million federal grant supported by Congressman Doggett and serves as an in-district location for field trips and outdoor learning. The OWL Center is located at Metz Elementary School, which was closed as part of the 2019 school closures, and is now home to the Central Operations and Bond teams.

Check out our Austin ISD calendar for more details on what’s happening in the district. And if there’s anything that needs to be on my radar, let me know!
